To Kill A Mockingbird In the widely known novel To Kill A Mockingbird there are two families that are very diverse and are text book examples of complete opposites on the moral ladder of success. The Cunninghams and the Ewells have two very distinct and opposite reputations. The Cunninghams which are very respected while the Ewells very much despised. The Ewells are given the privilege to hunt out of season, so that the residents of the small town of Maycomb would not have to tolerate their continuous begging twenty-four hours a day for seven days a week. These two families show the respectability of hard workers or, in the Ewells case, can fill their peers with sorrow. The Cunninghams have pride, as for the Ewells, they have a natural like anarchist nature that will eventually haunt them and hurt others because of their lurid like attitude. The Cunningham's are very respected by the citizen's of Maycomb county. The Cunninghams took nothing, unless they could pay it back. Walter the youngest in the Cunningham clan was in the same class at school as Scout Finch the daughter of Atticus Finch. While in school, a fresh young new school teacher known as Miss Caroline did not know the reputations of the predecessors of these two children. In what looked like a good day for the rookie teacher quickly turned into complete disarray and a total adversity trip for the teacher. Walter Cunningham being raised in a very hard working environment was taught not to take what he could not pay back. The teacher obviously did not know about his background in the most minute way and embarrassed him extensively by almost demanding him to take some lunch money. Knowing that he could not pay Miss Caroline back in the way that she had in mind he knew that he could take the money which he wanted to take so bad. Walter eventually ended up eating w ith the Finch's. While eating at the Finch's he did not know what to do with all of the food that they have offered to him. For example he drowned his waffles in a lake of syrup. Bob Ewell's son, Burris was also faced in the same way but in an total opposite direction and purpose. The same day as the Walter Cunningham incident there was another incident concerning the Ewells. Burris had "cooties." A "cootie" came frantically flying out of the assumed Afro of Burris's hair, and scared the overseer of the class, Miss Caroline. Miss Caroline quickly demanded that Burris go home and wash and scrub his hair with Kerosine. Burris coming from what seemed like a broken home and he had no pride so, he told the teacher off, made her cry, threatened her, and then left. The Cunninghams are given special privileges. Cunninghams paid Atticus for some legal work that Atticus did with their farm, they paid him with food, and other services. The population of Maycomb county excepted this because the y know that the family is very loyal, truthful and extremely hard working. The Cunningham's would never take anything that they couldn't payback equally or greater of value. Then their are your slacking, lying, cootie infested, mooching Ewells. Bob Ewell is a total drunk, he takes what money he may have earned or stole and drinks it away. Mr. Ewell very rarely or if ever has bought or cooked his family a hot and total nutritious meal in his life. The kids would basically shrivel up in the little shack that they live in and starve, if they did not have the privilege to hunt and eat the food that they kill. The Cunninghams were a family of truthfulness, loyalty and able to carry on great responsibilities. They did not want to hurt anyone, they were grateful for the people that had helped them on their journey of life. When the Cunninghams were wrong they admitted it, when they were right they didn't show it. They had great respect for anyone who walked on the face of the earth. But as usual the Ewells were just the opposite, they did not tell the truth on a consistent basis, and it wasted a human life. After

It was a 4 days trip. Shimla is the capital of Northern most state of India, namely Himal Pradesh. On a cold night of november (5 november 2010, Sunday), I and my friends along with the teachers board the flight to Shimla, we all were a little excited, since for most of us it was our first trip through the air. On Saturday moring we reached the Shimla airport. The airport was crowded with the thick mass of touristers who had came to explore the magnificiant creation of god. As this was the biginning of winter, the climate was very cold here. Our English sir, Mr. Murali, instructed us to put on our sweaters. We came out of the Airpot, and moved towards a bus which was provided by the Shimla tourism. The bus started moving and we were first taken to Wildflower hall which is now a luxury hotel, where our food was arranged. The hotel was enough to tell the rich cultural heritage of Shimla. It was nearly noon when we were to visit the most exciting place of interest in Shimla,the Summer hill,It is said that Mahatma Gandhi lived in these quiet surroundings during his visits to Shimla. Himachal Pradesh University is also situated here. We enjoyed 2 days in these hills, in the morning we went to take bath in the nearby river, we were provided with traditional food of Shimal, Baadi and Bada. On the third day we left the Summer hills and went for shopping in the the well-developed malls of Shimla. I along with my friends bought many items of our interests, in which the Shimalian clothes were the most interesting. In the evening we went to a mini zoo in Kufri where rare breed of pheasants and wild animals are kept in natural habitat. Of which the most attracting was the state bird of himachal pradesh the ‘Monal’,it had a colour mixture of black, light green and orange. The other attraction of this zoo are Tibetan wolf, Brown Bear and Barking Deer. The next day, we had an exciting opportunity to visit the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, this magnificent English renaissance structure was the former Vicerega Lodge. Its lawns and woodland added attraction to the visitors. Here entry is by a ticket of minimum charge. A portion of the interior is also open to the public. This building is a symbol of ancient British architecture  in India. On the morning of 9 november 2010, we were to visit our final place of the trip,the ‘Shimla state’ museum. We found a collection of paintings, jewellery and textiles of the region there. We had a great time there. In the evening we boarded our return flait to Nedumbassery. We had a great time in Shimla, we all enjoyed the trip. We hope the school authorities will put forward interesting trips like this in the coming years also.

Sanford and Son and The Chapelle Show   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   It was hilarious whenever Fred Sanford of the hit series Sanford and Son used to fake his heart attack saying that famous phrase, â€Å"I’m coming Elizabeth† or what about him telling Aunt Ester how ugly she was. No one took that type of comedy to the heart and it was intended to hurt no one. It was all for a laugh. Now in today’s time there are new shows on television such as The Chapelle Show, which is hosted and directed by the comedian Dave Chapelle. The object of this show seems to be how much fun he can make of a different race. Times have changed and so have peoples’ since of humor. People went from the laid-back type sitcoms such as Sanford and Son, The Three Stooges, and The Little Rascals, which are all types of shows that people can watch with their entire family, to shows even adults feel turned away from. Some examples include The Chapelle Show and In Living Color.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Fred Sanford never meant any harm by acting as if he did not understand Officer Hoppy’s (the white cop) way of explaining things. Officer Smitty (the black cop) would always have to translate it so that Fred was able to understand what was going on. In the episode â€Å"We’ve Been Robbed†, Fred is cleaning up the place and accidentally knocks over Lamonts’ (his partner in business and thirty-four year old son) porcelain and glass collection. Fred acts as if they had been robbed whenever his son gets home and he informs Lamont that the two robbers were white. (Ruben) This was probably overlooked by most of the viewers not thinking twice about it. An Analysis of Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant” Essay

In â€Å"Shooting an Elephant,† George Orwell finds himself in a difficult situation involving an elephant. The fate of the elephant lies in his hands. Only he can make the final decision. In the end, due to Orwell’s decision, the elephant lay dying in a pool of blood. Orwell wins the sympathy of readers by expressing the pressure he feels as an Anglo-Indian in Burma, struggling with his morals, and showing a sense of compassion for the dying animal. Readers sympathize with Orwell because they can relate to his emotions in the moments before the shooting. Being the white â€Å"leader,† he should have been able to make an independent decision, but was influenced by the â€Å"natives† (Orwell 101). Orwell describes his feelings about being pressured to shoot the elephant: â€Å"Here I was the white man with his gun, standing in front of the unarmed crowd – seemingly the leading actor of the piece; but in reality I was only an absurd puppet pushed to and fro by the will of those yellow faces behind (101). Everyone has been in a situation in which he or she has been expected to be a leader. For different reasons people are looked to as leaders, sometimes because of their race, ethnicity, or heritage. In this case, Orwell was pictured as a leader because he was British and he worked for the British Empire. Readers are able to relate to the fact that he does not want to be humiliated in front of the Burmese. He declares, â€Å"Every white man’s life in the East, was one long struggle not to be laughed at† (101). Orwell compares the elephant to the huge British Empire, and just as the elephant has lost control, he feels that when the white man turns tyrant it is his own freedom that he destroys (100). Secretly he hates the British Empire and is on the side of the Burmese (97). The elephant is equivalent to the British Empire ravaging through Burma and disrupting the little bit of peace that they have. So in that instant he felt that he had to kill the elephant. Another aspect that wins reader’s sympathy is Orwell’s struggle with what he  thought was right and what the Burmese wanted him to do. The readers have a sense that he did not have ill-intent to kill the elephant. When Orwell says, † As soon as I saw the Elephant I knew with certainty that I ought not shoot him† (99). The readers know that cruelty or hatred for the beast was not his motive. Orwell repeats the he does not want to kill it and the readers sympathize with him. Almost everyone has been in a situation were he or she could not base a decision on personal beliefs and knows that going against those beliefs is very difficult. Orwell explains, â€Å"For it is the condition of his rule that he shall spend hid life in trying to impress the ‘natives’ and so in every crisis he has got to do what the ‘natives’ expect of him† (100). Readers respect Orwell for his sense of duty. He realizes the his decision must be based on the best interest of the Burmese. Also, Orwell showed great feelings of compassion for the dying animal. He was killing the animal because he had to. He did not feel strong and powerful, as a hunter would; he felt weak and helpless. Orwell so vividly describes the elephant’s death, almost as it were giving him pain to watch. The elephant lay, â€Å"dying, very slowly and in great agony. . .† (Orwell 102). While the elephant lay dying Orwell can feel nothing but helplessness. He describes the experience as â€Å"dreadful to see the great beast lying there, powerless to move and yet powerless to die, and not even to bee able to finish him† (102). He felt helpless, with no bullets left in his gun; he was unable to put the elephant out of his misery. The compassion that he felt was obvious, he waited so long for the animal to die but, â€Å"could not stand it anymore and went away† (Orwell 102). The detailed description that Orwell gives of the death leaves the impression that he actually had feelings for the animal. If it were a routine killing he would have not even considered how the elephant felt. Orwell was very detailed about his feelings about the killing through out the essay. Most readers have respect and sympathy for him because of his emotional turmoil before the shooting, his struggle with his own feelings about killing, and his feelings of sadness for the elephant.
