Examination of Mattel's China Experience - Case Study Example Following the dispatch, Mattel changed the toy trade with the creation of talking dolls and toys. Mattel opened up to the world in the year 1960 and very quickly figured out how to highlight among top 500 biggest U.S modern organizations. Mattel presented Hot Wheels in 1968. This was a moment achievement, second to just Barbie regarding prevalence and deals. Mattel experienced enormous review of an assortment of its items produced in and delivered from China in 2007. They included toothpaste, vehicle tires, hound food, and fish. Chief Robert Eckert was gazing an emergency in the eye and when things chilled off, the firm had reviewed 19 million toys Chinese produced toys. Upset clients took steps to evade Chinese made toys as the reviews inspired worries over the nature of re-appropriating in China. Key Issues In August 2007, Mattel reviewed a huge number of their toys because of compromising measures of lead paint. Mattel had contracted Chinese makers to create toys for their benefit , yet neglected the way that a few limitations authorized in the U. S. were not substantial in China. Since Mattel had contracted Chinese makers for a long time without hiccups, they found no motivation to question their workmanship in 2007. Unlikeable Characters and Jean Rhyss Voyage in the Dark
Unlikeable Characters and Jean Rhyss Voyage in the Dark Do all main characters have to be likeable? For some readers, a likeable character and/or narrator is the only gateway into a novel. Without the pleasant, inoffensive voice of the novelâs guide, the closed-off reader may dismiss a novel that thrives because of its rough, unapproachable, even feral character. Although my reading tastes have changed over the years, I canât recall a period of time when I put a self-imposed ban on any novel or work of literature that didnât have a likeable protagonist. When we read a novel, we are often reading about the fictional personal history of strangers. When did history solely focus on safe, simple, reliable people? When did history only immortalize those who possessed a clean and pious record of saintly behavior? In her third novel, Voyage in the Dark, Jean Rhys conjures the character of Anna Morgan. Although not entirely true to the authorâs life, itâs been widely acknowledge that the novel heavily borrows from the authors culturally varied background. Anna is a recent transplant to England from the West Indies. She is still in the late stages of teenagehood and finds work as a chorus girl. She misses her native home with a fierce and very potent ache that ultimately fuels her depression and self-destructive apathy. Unlike the witty heroines of a Jane Austen novel, Annaâs inner misery prevents her from rising above her challenges. The text even seems to suggest that upon leaving her beloved West Indies, Anna decided to completely shut down. She chooses numbness in order to mute the unbearable pain. In her essay titled Go On and Hate Me: The Remarkable Handling of Pity in Jean Rhysâ Voyage in the Dark, author Rachel Howard notes, âAnna Morgan is the essence of unlikeable character , if by unlikeable we mean that she refuses to allow anyone to sympathize with her. One of Annaâs defining traits is that when she elicits pity, she trounces it.â Howardâs succinct observations pinpoint the core of Anna as an unlikeable and aloof character. Rhys has created a character that is both hopeless and certain of her fate, a young woman who is more so governed by the strength of her pride than her heart. For Anna, the absence of the West Indies is akin to the abrupt absence of a lover. The feeling goes beyond feeling homesick. In the haunting opening of the novel, Anna says, âIt was as if a curtain has fallen, hiding everything I had ever known. It was almost like being born again.â Later on she adds, âI got used to everything except the cold and that the towns we went to always looked so exactly alike. You were perpetually moving to another place which was perpetually the same.â When I first read Voyage in the Dark, I interpreted Annaâs detached narration, the lack of visceral, emotional confessions, and her hapless luck as symptoms of defeat. A wounded soul who employed the wrong defense tactics. A young woman who was terrified at the idea of growing up and calling this strange land her new home. Anna doesnt want to be saved. It would interfere with the comfort of wallowing in her melancholy. I also understood that Anna was not meant to be a Pollyanna carbon copy, nor was the readerâs sympathy intended to excuse Anna of her more rotten character traits. In the first chapter, Anna casually describes England and her environment with less than PC words. She says, âMarket Street smelt of the wind, but the narrow street smelt of niggers and woodsmoke and salt fishcakes fried in lard.â The usage of this word to describe black people deliberately sheds light on Annaâs mindset, in addition to her race and level of white privilege. Anna may be an outsider , but in no way is she the same type of outsider as the silent and nameless black characters. Her depression may be connected to her class standing, but it is not the result of systemic, historical, and/or overt racial discrimination and oppression. As a young black woman reading this novel, who was typically one of the few black students in her middle school and high school classes and had to endure the sheer awkward terror of hearing white classmates smoothly pronounce THAT word while reading Huckleberry Finn, Black Like Me, and To Kill a Mockingbird, one would assume that Iâd toss the book across the room. Yet what kind of reader would I be if I simply discarded every book that made me uncomfortable? Unlike the aforementioned books, I have always been drawn to main characters who can reflect parts of myself, who can speak to the nuances of existing and fighting to live in a male-dominated world. Not tragic heroines who only exist within the parameters of that label, but girls and women who become entangled in a lifestyle of tragedy. The novelâs language is mesmerizing. Revelations appear to be bursting at the seams, but are in fact, a cloak over real vulnerability. Anna Morgan loves in a way that I understand, can even id entify within myself. When you are trapped in depressionâs hold, it feels like youâre forever swirling around and around a drain. Depression, like mental illness in general, is still a taboo subject. Our culture continues to regard it as something sinister and defective. People hear the word depression or mental illness, and they succumb to the heartlessness of their ignorance and judgment. They simply think of mental illness as some horrible affliction thats beneath them. They picture dirty insane asylums of yesteryear, people babbling nonsense in padded cells, a corrupted mind suddenly alien. They call us crazy as though it were a slur. Although Anna actually spends more time talking about outside environments and peopleâs actions rather than internal states, I saw this choice as a mildly effective way to keep things in control. Depression leads to apathy and apathy disrupts a personâs ability to give and receive love. Sometimes in the dead of night, I travel back in time and remember the relationship I had with the only boyfriend that received an I love you. Things werenât always sunny skies and pots of gold at the end of rainbows. We both pushed each other away. Like Annas lovers, he never really understood me. Like Anna, my depression and overall low self-regard transformed into an indifference that caused destruction. A Advertisement For Reebok s Sports - 943 Words
This advertisement, for Reebok, shows six pictures of J.J. Watt pulling weights behind him while running in a football stadium with fire behind him. On the bottom of the advertisement is the text, ââ¬Å"PUMP TO FIT. FIT TO IGNITE.â⬠. In the center of the advertisement is a concrete sidewalk with football turf on both sides and Reebok Zpump tennis shoes in the middle of the sidewalk, displaying the little round pump button on the tennis shoes. The thesis for this ad is: Wear these tennis shoes and you will be just as fast and explosive as J.J. Watt is on the football field. The purpose of this ad is to convince the audience to purchase these shoes. This Reebok advertisement, which is in Menââ¬â¢s Fitness, is intended for athletes, but most specifically football players. J.J. Watt is the most feared defensive end in the NFL and this advertisement helps athletes believe that they themselves can be just as good and explosive as J.J. Watt just by wearing these tennis shoes. J.J. Watt is shown in different stances as he takes off to run, which would most likely be the 40 yard dash, because he is shown on turf surrounded by a football stadium. At first, he starts off pulling the weights, which are attached to his waist. The Effects Of Audience On Writing Nella Larsen s Choices
The Effects of Audience on Writing: Nella Larsenââ¬â¢s Choices in Passing and Their Effect Many authors, in both general literature and Black artists alike have many questions when crafting their arguments and stories. Why am I writing this? What am I hoping to accomplish from writing? And most importantly, Who am I writing for? When it comes down to who a writerââ¬â¢s intended audience is, it comes across as one of the most vital questions one can ask. With audience choice comes a plethora of other choice. What medium should I use to make Just for an example, letââ¬â¢s say that there is and middle aged author named Hannah who wants to write a novel about Christianity and how it can positively affect the lives of young liberal arts students. In order to appeal to her target audience in an effective manner she must choose carefully the appropriate medium to use. If she were to simply write an essay or argumentative speech about why liberal young adults will surely be thrown to the lake of fire if they donââ¬â¢t find Christianity, she would surely start an uproar. So, she decides to write a short story about a young woman who dies early and is confronted with her ââ¬Å"sinfulâ⬠lifestyle choices in the form of various odysseys. She doesnââ¬â¢t directly confront her audience with her much harsher main intent. On the more realistic side of things we have the author of Passing, Nella Larsen. Q. 1: what did Churchill mean in May 1945 by the term ââ¬Å"Iron Curtainâ⬠? A. 1: When Churchill stated ââ¬Å"An Iron Curtain is being drawn upon their front. We will write a custom essay sample on Iron Curtain or any similar topic only for you Order Now â⬠He means that during 1945 when the war was over, he was talking about an imaginary line drawn between communism in the East and the democratic governments in the West. This was to prevent more fighting over the systems; Churchill knew that the Soviet Union were dangerous. Churchill wanted the allies to get to Berlin and take it before the Russians would. He claims in his speech ââ¬Å"Nobody knows what Soviet Russia intends to do in the immediate future. â⬠This shows he knew they were a threat he just didnââ¬â¢t know when they were going to pounce. A. 2: The Iron curtain countries included: Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Yugoslavia. The actions taken in these countries were: in Bulgaria the communists executed leaders of other parties. In Czechoslovakia the USSR purged civil service, Security Police moved in. East Germany: industrial machinery and resources were moved to the USSR. The scientists and technicians moved to USSR. More actions were taken in other countries, the whole strategy of different countries had changed, this speech was inspirational and made countries feel like they could be independent instead of relying on others. Q. 3: Explain Stalinââ¬â¢s reply to Churchillââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Iron Curtain Speechâ⬠A. 3: Stalinââ¬â¢s reply to Churchillââ¬â¢s speech was weird, Stalin didnââ¬â¢t really state the truth and made up figures to make people feel sorry for him, how USSR had been hit harder than any other country. This was the reason why Churchill was suspicious of Stalin because he wasnââ¬â¢t being truthful; he had become more independent more powerful so his response to the speech mad Churchill even more suspicious. To Kill A Mockingbird Essays (1045 words) - To Kill A Mockingbird
To Kill A Mockingbird In the widely known novel To Kill A Mockingbird there are two families that are very diverse and are text book examples of complete opposites on the moral ladder of success. The Cunninghams and the Ewells have two very distinct and opposite reputations. The Cunninghams which are very respected while the Ewells very much despised. The Ewells are given the privilege to hunt out of season, so that the residents of the small town of Maycomb would not have to tolerate their continuous begging twenty-four hours a day for seven days a week. These two families show the respectability of hard workers or, in the Ewells case, can fill their peers with sorrow. The Cunninghams have pride, as for the Ewells, they have a natural like anarchist nature that will eventually haunt them and hurt others because of their lurid like attitude. The Cunningham's are very respected by the citizen's of Maycomb county. The Cunninghams took nothing, unless they could pay it back. Walter the youngest in the Cunningham clan was in the same class at school as Scout Finch the daughter of Atticus Finch. While in school, a fresh young new school teacher known as Miss Caroline did not know the reputations of the predecessors of these two children. In what looked like a good day for the rookie teacher quickly turned into complete disarray and a total adversity trip for the teacher. Walter Cunningham being raised in a very hard working environment was taught not to take what he could not pay back. The teacher obviously did not know about his background in the most minute way and embarrassed him extensively by almost demanding him to take some lunch money. Knowing that he could not pay Miss Caroline back in the way that she had in mind he knew that he could take the money which he wanted to take so bad. Walter eventually ended up eating w ith the Finch's. While eating at the Finch's he did not know what to do with all of the food that they have offered to him. For example he drowned his waffles in a lake of syrup. Bob Ewell's son, Burris was also faced in the same way but in an total opposite direction and purpose. The same day as the Walter Cunningham incident there was another incident concerning the Ewells. Burris had "cooties." A "cootie" came frantically flying out of the assumed Afro of Burris's hair, and scared the overseer of the class, Miss Caroline. Miss Caroline quickly demanded that Burris go home and wash and scrub his hair with Kerosine. Burris coming from what seemed like a broken home and he had no pride so, he told the teacher off, made her cry, threatened her, and then left. The Cunninghams are given special privileges. Cunninghams paid Atticus for some legal work that Atticus did with their farm, they paid him with food, and other services. The population of Maycomb county excepted this because the y know that the family is very loyal, truthful and extremely hard working. The Cunningham's would never take anything that they couldn't payback equally or greater of value. Then their are your slacking, lying, cootie infested, mooching Ewells. Bob Ewell is a total drunk, he takes what money he may have earned or stole and drinks it away. Mr. Ewell very rarely or if ever has bought or cooked his family a hot and total nutritious meal in his life. The kids would basically shrivel up in the little shack that they live in and starve, if they did not have the privilege to hunt and eat the food that they kill. The Cunninghams were a family of truthfulness, loyalty and able to carry on great responsibilities. They did not want to hurt anyone, they were grateful for the people that had helped them on their journey of life. When the Cunninghams were wrong they admitted it, when they were right they didn't show it. They had great respect for anyone who walked on the face of the earth. But as usual the Ewells were just the opposite, they did not tell the truth on a consistent basis, and it wasted a human life. After

Tour Report Essay Example Tour Report Essay Tour Report Essay This is the report of the most exciting tour we had in the first week of november from our school. The trip was to Shimla. It was a 4 days trip. Shimla is the capital of Northern most state of India, namely Himal Pradesh. On a cold night of november (5 november 2010, Sunday), I and my friends along with the teachers board the flight to Shimla, we all were a little excited, since for most of us it was our first trip through the air. On Saturday moring we reached the Shimla airport. The airport was crowded with the thick mass of touristers who had came to explore the magnificiant creation of god. As this was the biginning of winter, the climate was very cold here. Our English sir, Mr. Murali, instructed us to put on our sweaters. We came out of the Airpot, and moved towards a bus which was provided by the Shimla tourism. The bus started moving and we were first taken to Wildflower hall which is now a luxury hotel, where our food was arranged. The hotel was enough to tell the rich cultural heritage of Shimla. It was nearly noon when we were to visit the most exciting place of interest in Shimla, the Summer hill,It is said that Mahatma Gandhi lived in these quiet surroundings during his visits to Shimla. Himachal Pradesh University is also situated here. We enjoyed 2 days in these hills, in the morning we went to take bath in the nearby river, we were provided with traditional food of Shimal, Baadi and Bada. On the third day we left the Summer hills and went for shopping in the the well-developed malls of Shimla. I along with my friends bought many items of our interests, in which the Shimalian clothes were the most interesting. In the evening we went to a mini zoo in Kufri where rare breed of pheasants and wild animals are kept in natural habitat. Of which the most attracting was the state bird of himachal pradesh the ââ¬ËMonalââ¬â¢,it had a colour mixture of black, light green and orange. The other attraction of this zoo are Tibetan wolf, Brown Bear and Barking Deer. The next day, we had an exciting opportunity to visit the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, this magnificent English renaissance structure was the former Vicerega Lodge. Its lawns and woodland added attraction to the visitors. Here entry is by a ticket of minimum charge. A portion of the interior is also open to the public. This building is a symbol of ancient British architectureà in India. On the morning of 9 november 2010, we were to visit our final place of the trip, the ââ¬ËShimla stateââ¬â¢ museum. We found a collection of paintings, jewellery and textiles of the region there. We had a great time there. In the evening we boarded our return flait to Nedumbassery. We had a great time in Shimla, we all enjoyed the trip. We hope the school authorities will put forward interesting trips like this in the coming years also.

Strategic Human Resources Planning Research Paper - 1
Strategic Human Resources Planning - Research Paper Example Corporate expansion is an issue that aims as wining a larger market share with the aim of increasing sales and hence more profit. Though to many business organizations corporate expansion is aimed at making more profit, it is not always the case. It is an act of risk taking with speculations that objectives will be achieved. When the expected outcome is not realized, the organization gets a big loss. This is the reason why Ericson (2007) depicts that despite the fact that corporate expansion is a fundamental form of strategic variation for business entities, it is the least understood outcome in the business sector, in which incentives, and constraints abound. For Hilton Hotel to achieve organizational expansion successfully, several financial actions must be taken. Obviously, in expanding into new markets, one of the main reasons is to beat growing competition. This means that proper planning must be factored in. Since the main objective of corporate expansion is to typically bettering existing corporate performance through increased profitability, enhancing business growth, and increasing the chances of survival in the market, several financial actions must be taken. To begin with, the organization must have evaluated the potential clients thus must establish land where the infrastructures will be build. The amount expected to set up a hotel is notably high. For high-class hotels like Hilton, the amount of money required is relatively high. This is because the organization is aimed at accommodating high-class people meaning that expensive materials are required. When the Hotel is already established, it must be equipped and the necessities put in place. These include food and accommodation facilities. Media industry Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Media industry - Essay Example (Ross 2004). The situation is not very different in the advertising industry, as we will see in the discussion on the industry. Women in British Media: Many media commentators described the 1990s as the decade of women. The (then) Conservative government in Britain initiated affirmative action to employ women in large numbers in all sectors including the media industry. There was an apprehension that there would not be enough female graduates to fill job demand. In 1990, three women were actually appointed as editors of national newspapers. This is not to say that the atmosphere of gender discrimination has totally changed. Soft Jobs and the Fair Sex: Even in the allocation of routine jobs, there is a gender divide. By convention men journalists covered news stories concerning politics, crime, finance, education and upbringing; women covered 'human interest', consumer news, culture and social policy. Men covered the 'facts', 'sensation' and 'male' angles while women covered the 'background and effects', 'compassion', 'general' and 'female' angles. The sources for men were men and women were women. The ethics behind men's stories were detached while those of women's were based on social needs. (Carter 1998 36 - Adapted from table) Is it different in the U.S. ... Broadcast journalism employs 26% women as local TV news directors, 17% as local TV managers and 13% as general managers in radio stations. The silver lining of the situation according to Byerly is that many male journalists today identify with feminism and "indeed, have taken their feminist colleagues' side to protest sexist news coverage as well as to demand more egalitarian newsroom policies." (Byerly 2004 113) And Internationally : The situation is not much different internationally. A survey by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), world's largest journalists' association, shows that the number of women journalists varies widely: from 6% in Sri Lanka to around 50% in Finland. But at higher - decision making - levels like editors, department heads and media owners, the numbers are very low and account for barely 6%. The percentage is highest (10-20) in Cyprus, Costa Rica, Mexico and Sweden. (Byerly 2004 109-126) Social Milieu and Women in Media: When we seek to analyze the levels at which women are employed by the media industry, it is important to consider the socio-political milieu in which the industry functions and the power the industry wields. This is because media too is a product of the socio-political milieu and cannot be considered in isolation. The social power of the communication (media) industries has long been recognised "as being at the heart of contemporary societies industrially, economically, politically and culturally" (Marris et. al. (eds.) 1999 13). Electronic age and the advent of the internet have added a new powerful thrust to traditional media, which primarily consisted of print media, radio and motion pictures and

Sanford and Son and The Chapelle Show :: comedy
Sanford and Son and The Chapelle Show à à à à à It was hilarious whenever Fred Sanford of the hit series Sanford and Son used to fake his heart attack saying that famous phrase, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m coming Elizabethâ⬠or what about him telling Aunt Ester how ugly she was. No one took that type of comedy to the heart and it was intended to hurt no one. It was all for a laugh. Now in todayââ¬â¢s time there are new shows on television such as The Chapelle Show, which is hosted and directed by the comedian Dave Chapelle. The object of this show seems to be how much fun he can make of a different race. Times have changed and so have peoplesââ¬â¢ since of humor. People went from the laid-back type sitcoms such as Sanford and Son, The Three Stooges, and The Little Rascals, which are all types of shows that people can watch with their entire family, to shows even adults feel turned away from. Some examples include The Chapelle Show and In Living Color. à à à à à Fred Sanford never meant any harm by acting as if he did not understand Officer Hoppyââ¬â¢s (the white cop) way of explaining things. Officer Smitty (the black cop) would always have to translate it so that Fred was able to understand what was going on. In the episode ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ve Been Robbedâ⬠, Fred is cleaning up the place and accidentally knocks over Lamontsââ¬â¢ (his partner in business and thirty-four year old son) porcelain and glass collection. Fred acts as if they had been robbed whenever his son gets home and he informs Lamont that the two robbers were white. (Ruben) This was probably overlooked by most of the viewers not thinking twice about it. People thought laughter was good and Fred Sanford made them laugh without using all of the cuss words he knew to do it. à à à à à These days, people think that cursing and making fun of people of other races is funny and that is just what The Chapelle Show does. The show comes on every Wednesday night at nine-thirty central time on comedy central with other discriminating shows such as South Park. South Park is a good example of racial discrimination because the only black character on there is a cook for a school. Boy that is one hell of a job. Chapelle tops them all though with skits such as The Racial Draft. In this skit he makes fun of every race there is.

An Analysis of Orwellââ¬â¢s ââ¬ÅShooting an Elephantââ¬Â Essay
In ââ¬Å"Shooting an Elephant,â⬠George Orwell finds himself in a difficult situation involving an elephant. The fate of the elephant lies in his hands. Only he can make the final decision. In the end, due to Orwellââ¬â¢s decision, the elephant lay dying in a pool of blood. Orwell wins the sympathy of readers by expressing the pressure he feels as an Anglo-Indian in Burma, struggling with his morals, and showing a sense of compassion for the dying animal. Readers sympathize with Orwell because they can relate to his emotions in the moments before the shooting. Being the white ââ¬Å"leader,â⬠he should have been able to make an independent decision, but was influenced by the ââ¬Å"nativesâ⬠(Orwell 101). Orwell describes his feelings about being pressured to shoot the elephant: ââ¬Å"Here I was the white man with his gun, standing in front of the unarmed crowd ââ¬â seemingly the leading actor of the piece; but in reality I was only an absurd puppet pushed to and fro by the will of those yellow faces behind (101). Everyone has been in a situation in which he or she has been expected to be a leader. For different reasons people are looked to as leaders, sometimes because of their race, ethnicity, or heritage. In this case, Orwell was pictured as a leader because he was British and he worked for the British Empire. Readers are able to relate to the fact that he does not want to be humiliated in front of the Burmese. He declares, ââ¬Å"Every white manââ¬â¢s life in the East, was one long struggle not to be laughed atâ⬠(101). Orwell compares the elephant to the huge British Empire, and just as the elephant has lost control, he feels that when the white man turns tyrant it is his own freedom that he destroys (100). Secretly he hates the British Empire and is on the side of the Burmese (97). The elephant is equivalent to the British Empire ravaging through Burma and disrupting the little bit of peace that they have. So in that instant he felt that he had to kill the elephant. Another aspect that wins readerââ¬â¢s sympathy is Orwellââ¬â¢s struggle with what heà thought was right and what the Burmese wanted him to do. The readers have a sense that he did not have ill-intent to kill the elephant. When Orwell says, â⬠As soon as I saw the Elephant I knew with certainty that I ought not shoot himâ⬠(99). The readers know that cruelty or hatred for the beast was not his motive. Orwell repeats the he does not want to kill it and the readers sympathize with him. Almost everyone has been in a situation were he or she could not base a decision on personal beliefs and knows that going against those beliefs is very difficult. Orwell explains, ââ¬Å"For it is the condition of his rule that he shall spend hid life in trying to impress the Ãânativesââ¬â¢ and so in every crisis he has got to do what the Ãânativesââ¬â¢ expect of himâ⬠(100). Readers respect Orwell for his sense of duty. He realizes the his decision must be based on the best interest of the Burmese. Also, Orwell showed great feelings of compassion for the dying animal. He was killing the animal because he had to. He did not feel strong and powerful, as a hunter would; he felt weak and helpless. Orwell so vividly describes the elephantââ¬â¢s death, almost as it were giving him pain to watch. The elephant lay, ââ¬Å"dying, very slowly and in great agony. . .â⬠(Orwell 102). While the elephant lay dying Orwell can feel nothing but helplessness. He describes the experience as ââ¬Å"dreadful to see the great beast lying there, powerless to move and yet powerless to die, and not even to bee able to finish himâ⬠(102). He felt helpless, with no bullets left in his gun; he was unable to put the elephant out of his misery. The compassion that he felt was obvious, he waited so long for the animal to die but, ââ¬Å"could not stand it anymore and went awayâ⬠(Orwell 102). The detailed description that Orwell gives of the death leaves the impression that he actually had feelings for the animal. If it were a routine killing he would have not even considered how the elephant felt. Orwell was very detailed about his feelings about the killing through out the essay. Most readers have respect and sympathy for him because of his emotional turmoil before the shooting, his struggle with his own feelings about killing, and his feelings of sadness for the elephant.

What Is Overregularization in Grammar
Overregularization is aà part of the language-learning process in which children extend regular grammatical patterns to irregular words, such as the use of goedà for went, or tooths for teeth. This is also known as regularization. Although technically wrong, saysà Kathleen Stassen Berger, overregularization is actually a sign of verbal sophistication: it shows that children are applying the rules. Meanwhile, The cure forà overregularization, according to Steven Pinker and Alan Prince, isà living longer, thereby hearing irregular past tense forms more often and strengthening [childrens]à memory traces.à An Example of Overregularization He is a perfectly healthy little boy with no more fears and worries than any other youngsters his age [two and a half], but one night he awakens screaming for Mommy and Daddy. Ginger bited me! he wails. Ginger is the little cocker spaniel next door. Stevie had been playing with him that afternoon. Mother had been there the whole time.à Ginger had not bitten Stevie. No, darling, Ginger didnt bite you! says Mama, comforting him. He did.à He bited meà on my foot.(Selma H. Fraiberg, The Magic Years) What Childrens Errors Tell Us Childrens errors...give us an idea about the state of their developing grammar systems. In fact, it may be inappropriate even to call them errors since they are often logical forms for the childs current state of development. The kinds of variation from adult rules that children make are often not ones that parents are likely to have made in any context, so children did not learn these variations through repetition. What parent would say to a child, often enough for the child to have acquired through repetition: The baby goed home or The baby wented home, My feets hurt orà even My foots hurt? In each of these utterances, it is clear that the child has figured out a commonly used structure rule but has not yet learned that there are exceptions to the rule.(Elizabeth Winkler, Understanding Language: A Basic Course in Linguistics, 2nd ed.) Overregularization and Plurality [O]ne of the first rules that English-speaking children apply is to add -s to form the plural. Overregularization leads many young children to talk about foots, tooths, sheeps, and mouses. They may even put the -s on adjectives when the adjectives are acting as nouns, as in this dinner-table exchange between my 3-year-old and her father:Sarah: I want somes.ââ¬â¹Father: You want some what?Sarah: I want some mores.Father: Some more what?Sarah: I want some more chickens.ââ¬â¹ Although technically wrong, overregularization is actually a sign of verbal sophistication: it shows that children are applying the rules. Indeed, as young children become more conscious of grammatical usages, they exhibit increasingly sophisticated misapplication of them. A child who at age 2 correctly says she broke a glass may at age 4 say she braked one and then at age 5 say she did braked another.(Kathleen Stassen Berger, The Developing Person Through Childhood and Adolescence) Regularizing the Language Regularization errors have been taken as evidence either that children rely on a template or schema for producing a stem and inflection, or that they have started to make use of an abstract rule . . ..Many observers, from at least Rousseau on, have noticed that children tend to regularize their language, getting rid of many irregular forms in adult use. Berko (1958) was one of the first people to offer experimental evidence that by age five to seven, children had identified different inflectional affixes and were able to add them to nonsense stems they had never heard before.(Eve V. Clark, First Language Acquisition) Overregularization and Language Development [O]verregularization errors occur over protracted periods of development.à Marcus et al. demonstrated that the rate ofà overregularization isà much lower than was typically assumed, i.e., children usually do not overregularize more often than 5-10% of the irregular verbs in their expressive vocabularies at any given time. Furthermore, the correct past tense form co-occurs with the incorrect version.(Jeffrey L. Elman et al., Rethinking Innateness: A Connectionist Perspective on Development) Sources The Developing Person Through Childhood and Adolescence, 2003. Was War Against The Confederate States of America Justified
The Civil War was a trying time in American History; societies crumbled, lives were lost, and a nation was torn apart in order to be made whole. However, was this conflict inevitable? Were the North and the South destined to battle out their differences? Were the decisions made by President Abraham Lincoln to make war on the CSA justified? While there is much deliberation on this topic, the final answer is yes to each and every question. The North and the South, though they shared many similarities, were irreparably divided over the slavery issue, such that conflict could not be avoided. Lincolnââ¬â¢s deliberations on the situations of the day were the only acceptable response to the issues at hand. Disagreement caused by the slavery issueâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This decision was not only just, but necessary for the Union to continue in the way the Founders had intended. Lincolnââ¬â¢s main reason for allowing the Civil War to occur was his belief that the South had overs tepped the bounds of law in order to maintain slavery. In the campaign for the Illinois Senate seat, Lincoln managed to maneuver Stephen A. Douglas, his key opponent, into an extremely vital and incriminating statement of the Southââ¬â¢s intentions. ââ¬Å"It matters not what the Supreme Court mayâ⬠¦decide as to the abstract question of whether slavery may or may not go into a Territoryâ⬠¦. The people have the lawful means to introduce it or exclude it as they please.â⬠[7] This set off a red flag in politiciansââ¬â¢ minds: did the South really believe it could override the laws of the United States? Evidently they did believe so, as in 1861 the South seceded from the nation, formed a confederation, elected leaders, and coined money; all of which were completely unconstitutional acts. Lincolnââ¬â¢s reverence for the law as the basis of the nationââ¬â¢s principles demanded that war be enacted to combat the South, who had blatantly defied those principles. In o rder for the Union to continue, its constituents had to follow its statutes or it would crumble. Both the division of the North and South and a President who protected the laws of the nation set the stage for a poignant question: Was the war with the South inevitable? Native Son Character Actions Defines Their Individual Essay Example For Students
Native Son: Character Actions Defines Their Individual Essay Personalities and Belief SystemsRichard Wrights novel, Native Son, consisted of various main andsupporting character to deliver an effective array ofpersonalities and expression. Each characters actions definestheir individual personalities and belief systems. The maincharacter of Native Son, Bigger Thomas has personality traitsspanning various aspect of human nature including actionsmotivated by fear, quick temper, and a high degree ofintelligence.Bigger, whom the novel revolves around, portraysvarious personality elements through his actions. Many of his action suggest an overriding response to fear, whichstems from his exposure to a harsh social climate in which a clearline between acceptable behavior for whites and blacks exists. His swift anger and his destructive impulses stem from that fearand becomes apparent in the opening scene when he fiercely attacksa huge rat. The same murderous impulse appears when his secretdread of the delicatessen robbery impels him to commit a viciousassault on his friend Gus. Bigger commits both of the brutalmurders not in rage or anger, but as a reaction to fear. Histypical fear stems from being caught in the act of doingsomething socially unacceptable and being the subject ofpunishment. Although he later admits to Max that Mary Daltonsbehavior toward him made him hate her, it is not that hate whichcauses him to smother her to death, but a feeble attempt to evadethe detection of her mother. The fear of being caught with awhite woman overwhelmed his common sense and dictated hisactions. When he attempted to murder Bessie, his motivation camefrom intense fear of the consequences of letting her live. Bigger realized that he could not take Bessie with him or leaveher behind and concluded that killing her could provide her onlymerciful end. The emotional forces that drive Bigger are conveyed by means otherthan his words. Besides reactions to fear, his actions demonstratean extremely quick temper and destructive impulse as an integralpart of his nature. Rage plays a key part in his basic nature, but does not directly motivate the murders he commits. Rage doesnot affect Biggers intelligence and quick thinking and it becomesevident during the interview with Briton. The detective makesBigger so angry that the interrogation becomes a game to Bigger,a game of logic and wills, of playing the stupid negro, andtelling the man exactly what he wants to hear. The game Biggerplays during the interrogation shows his great intelligence andability to think quickly on his feet. Bigger also displayed hisintelligence in the creation of the ransom note. Using thesituation to his advantage, Bigger wrote a ransom note to extortMarys parents for money. To make the note even more convincingand to dissuade blame from himself, Bigger signs the no te with thecommunist symbol of a hammer and sickle. Although the book revolves around Bigger he possesses few goodqualities, which get his horrendous actions negate, making him ananti-hero. He possess the violent tendencies to commit rape, extortion of the dead girls parents, robbing, and killing innocentpeople. These traits do not portray a simple victim ofcircumstance, but a habitual criminal acting out against asociety. While Bigger dominates the story, his appalling actionsmake him a man that the reader can not look upon as a hero. Infact the author punishes the anti-hero character by condemning himto death for his crimes. One of the two most sympathetic characterizations of white personsin the novel comes from the character of Jan Erlone, Mary Daltonsfriend. He exhibits an enthusiastic personality and represents anidealistic young organizer for the Communist party. Marysparents and their servant Peggy distrust his motives. Biggerinitially expresses a distaste for reds when responding to Jansfriendly advances during their first meeting. While receivingdistrust from those around him, Jan retains a simple belief in theequality for all men, regardless of social class or race. Throughout Jans first meeting with Bigger, he regards Bigger withthe utmost respect. During the course of the night, Jan sits inthe front of the car with Bigger, eats with him, drinks with him,and speaks to him as an equal. Those actions of equality portraymore than a decent man, it shows that Jans character possesses astrong sense of morality and honesty. Jan is also characterizedby other heroic traits, forgiveness and understanding. As aninteresting twist of fate, Jan gets Bigger an attorney, anddemonstrates that he could forgive Bigger for implicating him forMarys kidnapping. The Battle With Grendels Mother EssayThemesFrustration and hopelessness develop as major themes of thestory. When Bigger and his friend Gus watch a sky writing plane,Bigger expresses frustration in his statement I could fly one ofthem things if I had a chance. Discussing the impossibility ofaccomplishment in the white-controlled world, Bigger expresseshopelessness, saying, They dont let us do nothing. When Gusreminds Bigger that they have always known this, Bigger agrees, but insists that he cannot accustom himself to it. Every time Ithink about it, he says, I feel like somebodys poking a red-hotiron down my throat. Today a good example of the same type offrustration can be seen on the various music videos done by blackartists. These video portray, poor education and a lack ofopportunities afforded to blacks. Oppression, hate, and the separatism between whites and blacksalso arises as a main theme. Bigger represents the oppressed butrebellious black, in contrast the Daltons represent naive whites, and Jan and Max represent the oppressed communists. These variouscharacters hate each other without comprehend the underlyingsocial cause. Only the oppressed groups come to help and forgiveeach other by the end of the novel, while the oppressors stillasking for bitter vengeance. The separatism become obvious whileBigger when sits in the car with Mary and Jan. He feels afraidand uncomfortable being treated like an equal and being allowed tosit near them. This separatism also made his oppressors blindlyignorant of the realities of social oppression. Separatismaffects both sides of the color line. The characters considereach other as separate entities, never interacting on an equalbasis. Social ignorance allows the scapegoating of Bigger, tovent the anger and rage built up from by many years of tens ionbetween the races. A good example of separatism and oppression inour area shows up in the conflicts between Whites and Cubans. Arguments about English as the official language as the officiallanguage of the US represent the manifestations of this conflict. A notable theme that the author portrays through Biggers actionscome from the true meaning of freedom to the oppressed. Biggersdiscovered freedom came to him in two instances, in both caseswhile committing murder. With the death of Mary Dalton, Biggerstarts to realize that for the first time he has gone against thelaw. Breaking the proverbial barrier and the proper limits ofwhat a black man can do in society he is no longer controlled orrestrained by another mans rules. This idea expands to note thatwhen Bigger himself defines the rules, he makes himself free. Interestingly serial killers in our society have multiplied, acommon trait that they all possess is abuse in their earlylifetime. Perhaps they act out of the same misguided need forfreedom that Bigger found when committing murder. Authors BeliefsBigger, his family, and Bessie all feel the affects of separatismand oppression. Richard Wright believes in the immorality ofoppression. He uses his book as a tool to vent his frustration,at the world that segregates negros. His characters, themes andconflicts probably originate from his own experience ofseparatism. By using such a wide range of characters, he givesthe readers who are not black an insight into the horrificallydesperate situations many poor blacks experience. Biggers actions toward Jan and Mary portray his resignation tothe social inequity of the color barrier. He acts simply, as asubservient yessah. It appears the author believes the truewall of separation between whites and blacks is an almostimpassable division. Jan and Max base their decisions on the equality of man. Having amoral basis for action leads them to have a means to deal withoppression and the ability to hope. In contrast, Bigger acceptsseparatism as an immutable condition, and rebels against it bycommitting crimes. Bigger receives punishment for his actions. The author would appears to support socialist concepts as theproper rebellion against oppression. He seems to believe in theequality of men and the value of demonstrating it in everydayactions.
